THE MOJITO

One of the earliest known “summer cocktails” is the Mojito. Its roots go back to 16th-century Cuba, a time when pirates ruled the seas and rum was a form of money. The Mojito, aka “El Draque,” is named after the hard-drinking English pirate Sir Francis Drake. Legend has it that this early version of the drink was made with aguardiente (a rough and trippy precursor to rum), lime, sugar, and mint—ingredients believed to help fend off illness during long sea voyages. However, due to its thirst-quenching, lip-smacking qualities, the Mojito became an IT drink, both 007 and Sex and the City: bespoke, sassy, and fifty shades of luscious lime.

SANGRIA

Sangria is not just a drink—it’s a cultural experience. Originating from the sunbathed vineyards of Spain and Portugal, this delightful concoction of chilled wine, fruit, and spices is a relaxing waltz of flavors, celebration, and, of course, afternoon siestas. Sangria is a drink that has stood the test of time, weaving its way through history, from the grand fêtes of ancient royalty to pool parties in the Hollywood Hills.

THE CAIPIRINHA

The Caipirinha (kai-purr-REEN-yah) may be the national drink of Brazil—but everyone seems to have their own way of making it. At its core, the Caipirinha is a symphony of cachaҫa (similar to rum), lime, bulbous clouds of granulated sugar, and crushed sugarcane. It’s so revered in the country that most Brazilians feel spending a day at the beach without having one is an incomplete day.

SGROPPINO

Sgroppino (scro-peen-yo) is a salutary Italian cocktail that is en vogue. Originating in Venice, this mercurial elixir is an operatic blend of prosecco, vodka, and frozen lemon sorbet. Served in champagne flutes, Sgroppino is not only visually appealing but also the ultimate chill beverage.

THE NEGRONI GRANITA

The Negroni Granita is an ideal summer cocktail for those looking for something icy, boozy, and gallant. Made with equal parts Campari, gin, and sweet vermouth, this Italian aperitif is infused with herbs and fruit. The addition of fresh orange and cherry juice gives it a sour-sweet taste.

THE FRENCH 75

The French 75 is named after the French 75mm field gun used during World War I. Inspired by heroic tales of the weapon, a Parisian bartender created a specialty WWI-inspired cocktail called “Soixante-Quinze,” aka 75. The drink began being compared to its namesake gun, referred to as “the most powerful drink in the world” that “hits with remarkable precision.” Featuring a whimsical mix of gin, pert lemon juice, syrup, and bubbly champagne, French 75 is an exemplary classic.

THE MINT JULEP

The ultimate American summer libation, the Mint Julep, originated in the southern United States during the 18th century. This classic cocktail is made with bourbon, sugar, water, and fresh mint, served over crushed ice in a copper cup. The Mint Julep quickly became a popular choice for cooling off on steamy summer days and remains a favorite at tony events like the Kentucky Derby.
