BOHO LUX

Enjoy a long weekend amongst enchanting redwoods, sprawling wineries and a vintage cannabis shop serving boutique, sungrown cannabis.

By DOUGLAS JAMES

Nestled among the charming woods of Philo, in the heart of Anderson Valley, lies a hushed gem: The Madrones. The area, known for its warm climate, coastal fog, and unique terroir, makes it incredibly favorable for growing grapes and cannabis. The handsome, secluded cabins are perfumed by nests of rose gardens.

One of the property’s newest additions is The Bohemian Chemist, a bespoke and cozy cannabis dispensary. To give the space an “herbal apothecary” feel, the owners, Jim Roberts and Brian Adkinson, imported the cabinetry and antique glass pharmacy bottles from an Eastern European vintage drugstore. Provocative photos of Man Ray drape the walls. The Bohemian Chemist flower brand started when Roberts’ 90-year-old mother, Rosemary, was ready to stop working in her cannabis garden, but wanted the garden itself to endure. The cannabis patch had provided the main ingredient for Rosemary’s homemade arthritis balm, an effective pain relief remedy that served her well. A woman before her time. As new managers of the garden, Jim and Brian (also owners of The Madrones) found themselves wondering how they could do sungrown California cannabis a little differently—elegant and intuitive. “Let loose, but keep it classy,” they like to say.

In addition to the dispensary, the property includes the wine tasting room, where you can sample the local pinots, The Wickson Restaurant, with a gargantuan wood-fire oven hunkered down in the center, and the Sun & Cricket Shop, which sells antiques, greeting cards, and one-of-a-kind gift items. The Brambles, a wizard-like, multi-purpose outdoor venue for weddings and private events set under a marquee of soaring redwoods completes the picture. It’s been dubbed “your own personal forest retreat.”

Come for the hypnotizing grounds, tasty wines, and secret hideaway fantasy—but don’t leave until you’ve tried the sungrown flower of Anderson Valley’s very finest.
