BLUE LOTUS
For centuries, ancient cultures paddled deep up the Nile to pluck the blooming, aromatic blue petaled flowers with a yellow yoke called the “Egyptian Lotus” or “Narcotic Lily.”
The shamans would ground up the lotuses (they aren’t really lotuses but lilies) and use them as medicines for anxiety, detoxification, inflammation, and as an aphrodisiac. Before long, the intoxicating blue beauties were being shipped all over the world.
The flower has mystical and spiritual prowess. Ancient Egyptians believed the Blue Lotus could provide a spiritual connection to the afterlife and communication with the divine. In Buddhism and Hinduism, the Blue Lotus flower is a potent meditation aid and symbolizes wisdom, knowledge, and the victory of the spirit over the body. In Hinduism, the Blue Lotus flower is a symbol of divine beauty. It often appears in artwork as a symbol of the god Vishnu, whom they associate with preservation and protection.
With such a historical pedigree, it’s not surprising that the flower is now being used in a variety of products, including vapes, pre-rolls, gummies, and teas. Herbalists have recently discovered that the flower’s therapeutic powers are due to its aporphine alkaloids: nuciferine and apomorphine. Apomorphine is a psychoactive compound that stimulates serotonin receptors and parts of the brain influenced by dopamine. Nuciferine blocks excessive dopamine receptor stimulation, serving as an anxiety reliever and sleep aid.
